Remote Learning with Spaces

March 17, 2020

We're all going to get through this together.

We understand that these are unprecedented and unpredictable times.

That is why we want to do whatever we can to help bring some normalcy to your lives, by ensuring you have all of the information, resources, and support to use Spaces in a remote/online setting.

Spaces will continue to remain free to use for 2020-2021.

Below are some FAQs you may have as someone new to the program. For any other questions, please email me at damian.matheson@spacesedu.com

What is Spaces?

We’ve (a company called myBlueprint) spent the past fifteen years developing best-in-class education products, watching how they’re used, and iterating based on student and teacher feedback from 6,500 schools.

A lot of that recent feedback has led us to our next big adventure. This new journey has led us to a place where we are currently developing a best-in-class portfolio solution for capturing and communicating learning, and growth as it happens.

In it's simplest form, Spaces will allow your students to capture evidence, and reflect on the learning being done at home right now, within a private and secure class setting.

What is a portfolio for the classroom?

When you look at your students, you don’t see their mid-term grade or the percentage they got on their last essay. You see the whole picture; a collection of what makes each student unique. You see their assignments and tests, but you also see their growth and their potential far beyond your class.

A portfolio allows everyone else to see that too. Spaces enables that portfolio.

Why would I use Spaces with my students?

There are many reasons why you would want to use a portfolio in your classroom. Here are three of the most popular ones:

1) One way a portfolio is used in education is to document learning. Similar to a journal, students capture evidence with pictures, videos, audio recordings, files, etc., and write a reflection on what they learned or how they felt.

2) A portfolio can also be used to demonstrate progress, such as overall growth or mastery of a concept. Along with #1, this is a great way to support remote/online learning, providing students with a self-directed tool to use to showcase what they are learning, and how they are progressing.

3) A product portfolio is a final, culmination of work, where the student has selected each artifact thoughtfully to curate a story with the content. This may be used for showcasing a final project, a graduate profile, or as a way to supplement an application for a scholarship, employment, post-secondary, etc.

How does Spaces work?

Simply put, as the teacher, you create a class in Spaces, and invite your students to it.

You (and your student) can use whatever device you have available, as long as you have an internet connection.

From there, you have a feed where you can see what your students are posting, or post artifacts of your own to some or all of your students.

You and your students can also reflect on their own posts.

With a few days adding and reflecting, your students will have a feed that looks something like this.

How do I create an account for my class?

All you have to do is visit spacesedu.com and sign up.

You can read about the specifics of how to get started here.

How do I get my students set up in my class?

You can either share a secure link with your students or a secure code. Both are specific to a class.

By using that link or code, when students create their accounts, they will be added to your class.

More information here.

Is your program safe and secure?

At Spaces, we believe in putting the student at the center of their journey with our product. Protecting student privacy is foundational to how we’ve built our company and is a key consideration in the decisions we make.

What does Early Access mean?

Some people refer to it as ‘beta’, others refer to it as a 'minimum viable product'. What ‘Early Access’ really means is that this is a new product, which has a lot of growth to reflect on. Good thing it’s built to do just that ????.

As a new product, you have the opportunity to help us shape what gets built next, what is missing, and what will allow this program to continue to help students and their teachers tell a story of the whole child; not just the report card.
