Become a Global Digital Citizen
Teaching Digital Citizenship Skills may seem tricky, but our SpacesEDU Team is here to help! We’ve partnered with DigCitInstitute for the month of October to amplify their mission to #UseTech4Good and empower educators, students, and families to bring about change using the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Never heard of the SDGs? No problem, check them out and share with your students. There may be one or two that really resonate with your students. Together you and your class can learn more about the chosen issue and become advocates. That’s one way we use tech for good!
If you are on social media, you can follow #UseTech4Good and #DigCitSDGs for daily challenges and advocacy. However, if this is your first introduction or you need to move more slowly, check out the challenges and do them all year long in a virtual SpacesEDU classroom.

Create A Virtual SpacesEDU Class
We know this might be a lot if you’re new to teaching digital citizenship and/or have never heard of Sustainable Development Goals. We encourage you to check out the SDGs with your class, follow the hashtags, and jump in when you’re ready!
Digital Citizenship Week takes place every third week in October, and we want to help you make it a memorable and lasting experience. In fact, this year marks a decade since Common Sense Media began this event!
SpacesEDU is FREE for teachers. You can create your digital classroom, invite your students (and families if you like) and use the challenges the DigCit Institute shares daily. Start by uploading the challenge (or make your own challenge) into the class feed. Allow your students to respond. Use their responses as teachable moments to build and show them as digital users, they can be advocates AND stay safe in the process.
Getting Started With SpacesEDU
You can even upload the ISTE Student Standards in your classroom as a way to help you and your students navigate this process. For instance, Standard 1.2 Digital Citizen:
Students recognize the rights, responsibilities and opportunities of living, learning and working in an interconnected digital world, and they act and model in ways that are safe, legal and ethical.
Introduce, Tag & Reflect on the ISTE Standards Using SpacesEDU
Our students are surrounded by a digital world. We have the power to help them see themselves as creators and designers as opposed to only consumers. We can help equip them with skills that keep them from being victimized, and in turn, they can teach these skills to their family and friends.
October might be a month where digital citizenship is spotlighted, but we know educators can go at the pace that fits the needs of their students and school communities all year long. SpacesEDU would like to help you in this mission!
