Three Tips to get the Most out of Your Conference Experience

Melody McAllister
January 9, 2023

The 2023 conference season is about to kick off with the Future of Education Technology Conference FETC in a matter of weeks. Our SpacesEDU team will be there and we hope to see you, too!

Educators Greg Bagby, Rachelle Dene Poth, and Bonnie Nieves joined Melody McAllister at SpacesEDU booth at FETC 2022 in Orlando.

Visit the SpacesEDU Booth 2349

We are so excited that educator, author, speaker and leader, Jed Dearybury, will be hosting demos using the SpacesEDU platform featuring lessons centered on play. Those who learn at our booth will have fantastic ideas to take back and implement in their respective school communities.

Many teachers attending FETC in New Orleans (or any of the upcoming conferences) are traveling on their own dime to be there. Others are being sent by their districts in hope they will return with valuable information to share with their colleagues.

Conferences are exciting and the energy of the first two days feels like a roller coaster. Educators will have the opportunity to attend sessions led by leaders using the latest in edtech, meet their virtual professional learning network PLN in real life, and talk with the creators of their favorite technology platforms. Then, before you know it, you’re flying or driving back home.

Get the Most of Of Your Conference Experience

Here are three tips that will help you enjoy your experience and get the most out of it. In fact, this is what I discussed in the last Thrive O’Clock Livestream with leaders, Rachelle Dene Poth, Tisha Poncio, and Jorge Valenzuela:

  1. The Expo Hall is fun & it’s THE PLACE to learn about edtech platforms. While visiting booths, you can offer critical feedback that could help make your favorite tools even better. Everything you have to share is valuable! And don’t forget to score some swag while you’re there! This is my (Melody McAllister) favorite part of the conference!
  2. Before you go, plan which sessions you do not want to miss and put them on your calendar! Also leave room between because you will run into people and those relationships with people you only see a few times a year, or will meet for the first time face to face, are just as important as attending sessions. This tip was offered by Rachelle Dene Poth.
  3. Create a Wakelet with all the resources you gather so you will have them in one place when you go back to school. Being organized will enable you to implement those amazing ideas you learned about. You can also share this resource with your PLN  who attended so they can contribute to it. This collaboration will also benefit your PLN who couldn’t make it. Tisha Poncio shared this gold nugget!

BONUS TIP: Explore the city you are in! “Don’t stay in your room all night,” says Jorge Valenzuela. Chances are high that socials are happening all over and you should go!

What are some tips you would offer about getting the most out of conferences? We’d love to hear your thoughts! Tag SpacesEDU in a Tweet and use #FETC!
